LESSON 70 DIALOGUE

Learn English – Lesson 70 – Travels
Peter has decided that he is going to go travelling rather than take the internship. He has discussed it with his family and eventually, those who were against the idea, relented. They will miss him when he has gone but they understand that this is something he really wants to do. He is going to go to Peru, but first he is going to go to Mexico as he has a friend who lives there. He hasn’t seen his friend for several years but they have stayed in touch and his friend will give him a bed for a week before he makes his way through Colombia, down to Peru.
He will depart in two days time and will have to pack and purchase a few last-minute items tomorrow. Tonight he is having a goodbye meal with his friends, Frank and Kelly.
Frank: Will you take a flight into South America?
Peter: No, I am going to hitchhike and take the bus. I really want to explore the landscape and see what each place has to offer. It’d be a shame to go all that way and miss out on so much.
Kelly: For goodness sake, please don’t tell your parents that’s what you plan to do. They are already fretting. They’ll freak out if they find out you’re traipsing through Colombia on your own.
Peter: I agree that it has a bad reputation, what with the drugs and such but I think a lot of it is propaganda, the media exaggerating the situation for their own agenda. I know enough Spanish to get by and I will learn more as I travel through Mexico.
Kelly: Well I hope you’re right. I am a little worried myself. I know you can look after yourself and I think what you are doing is very brave. I don’t think I could do it.
Frank: Me neither. Although, not speaking another language is certainly enough to unsettle me in any non-English speaking country.
Peter: You should learn a language. It’s not easy but it’s worth it. Spanish and Mandarin and used widely but I think Mandarin is much harder.
Frank: Okay, I will. I am going to book some Spanish classes tomorrow and see how I get on.
Kelly: This is so amazing for you. I will be sitting behind a desk on Monday, typing away and battling with the photocopier while you will be relaxing in Mexico.
Peter: Not so much relaxing really. There is still a lot of the trip to organise when I get over there. I will have to find out about the public transport and I still have things I need to buy. I want to travel light so I don’t have to pay a lot for my luggage on the plane. My friend researched many of the things I will need and I was able to buy the things that were cheaper here and not go over on the weight. I can buy the rest there and save myself a pretty penny.
Frank: Well, I am very excited for you my friend. Please keep in touch any way you can. We will miss you.
Peter: I’ll send you a letter whenever I get a chance. I’m going to write a travelogue of the whole trip. I’ll definitely send you an abridged version. Do you want me to bring back anything in particular for you?
Kelly: Surprise me. Just promise me you’ll be careful and check in every chance you get.
Peter: I promise.
Facts: Mexico has one of the world’s largest economies, it is the tenth largest oil producer in the world, the largest silver producer in the world and is considered both a regional power and middle power.
