– A Great Adventure –

Learn English – Lesson 62 – A Great Adventure

Billy is thinking of going travelling. He wants to see as much of Europe as he can over four months. Travelling from the UK, his first port of call is France. From there, he will make his way through to the South of Spain, up through Portugal, back through the North of Spain, on to Italy, then Greece, and then head up to Germany before returning home. He is travelling on a budget so he will be camping through most of the journey and he has a fold up bicycle to help save money on travel.

He has never been travelling on his own before and he wants to make sure he is fully prepared for any eventuality. He starts writing a list of all the things he thinks he may need for his new adventure. The list includes a tent, a sleeping bag, a torch and a tin opener, amongst other things. After completing the list, he realises that he needs to buy some new equipment.

It is important to have a fully stocked first aid kit. Though Billy doesn’t plan on getting into any scrapes, it is always best to be prepared. “Better to have and not need, than need and not have”, so the saying goes. He’ll need to buy plasters, alcohol wipes and iodine, as well as, a pair of scissors.

The next thing he’ll need is phrasebooks for the countries he is planning to visit. He writes a list of the countries. He includes Romania and The Ukraine, though he may not have the chance to visit them after his long journey to Greece. A puncture repair kit for his fold up bicycle is essential. He doesn’t want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat tyre. He writes down a sewing kit also, his budget won’t allow him to spend money on new socks all the time.

The last thing on his shopping list is waterproof clothing. Although it is the summer, he knows that France and Germany can get quite wet. This reminds him that he may need to buy some silicone based sealant for his tent. He certainly doesn’t want to wake up drenched one night. He checks his inventory and finds that he has a full tube so there is no need to buy more. He gets back to his list and double checks that he has thought of everything. Once he is convinced that he hasn’t forgotten anything he prepares to go shopping.

This is going to be a great adventure!

Facts: Frenchman Jeremy Marie spent 5 years travelling through 71 countries and paid nothing in travel costs. Instead, he relied on the kindness of strangers as he hitchhiked through Europe, USA, South America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and plenty more in between.

Once again, let us remember the differences between these two tenses:

Present SimplePresent Continuous

Something that always happens.

The sun rises in the East and sets in the west.

Actions happening at the time of speaking.

Something that happens frequently.

Actions is progress (actions that have been started but haven’t finished yet)

Something that is usually true.

Doctors care about their patients’ health.

With adverbs of time referring to the current moment.

This week she is learning English

You’re English is improving this year

I’m learning to drive this month

How often things are done.

I go to the gym every day.

Statements in which we can promise, apologise, refuse, agree, etc.

We don’t normally use the following verbs in the present continuous form:

To believeTo belongTo consist
To containTo fitTo know
To hateTo likeTo love
To meanTo needTo prefer
To realizeTo rememberTo suppose
To seemTo understandTo want

Look at this painting. I love it! (not I’m loving it)

It seems to be a good plan. (Not It is seeming)

I’m thirsty. I want something to drink. (Not I am wanting)

In the case of to think, it’s never possible to use the present continuous form when it means “to believe” or “to have an opinion”.

What do you think about my new job?

I think he is a little bit tired.

However, you can use to think in the present continuous form when it means “to consider”.

She is thinking of moving to another country. (she considers)

I’m thinking about what to do with my life.

Verbs of sense like to hear, to see, to smell and to taste are also not commonly used in the present continuous form.

With the expression to be selfish, the use of the present simple or the present continuous form changes its meaning:

Scott never shares anything. He is very selfish.

(In the present simple this means that he is generally selfish)

Billy is usually very generous. I don’t understand why he is being so selfish.

(In the present simple this means that he is behaving selfishly at the moment)

With the adverb of frequency Always, the meaning of the sentence changes if you use the present simple or the present continuous form.  The present simple with the adverb always expresses that the action is done every time, without exception.

I always have a cup of coffee in the morning.

We always go to the beach on Saturday.

The present continuous with the adverb alwaysexpresses that the action is done too many times.

Do you really want an ice cream? You are always eating ice cream.

You’re always thinking about the past. You should live in the present.

It’s possible to use the present simple or present continuous with the verbs to feel and to look to refer to how someone feels or looks at this moment.

Diana looks well today/Diana is looking well today.

I feel really optimistic now/I’m feeling really optimistic now.
