Usually, a TOEFL essay is one of the following types:

It is better to argue a clear position, and not to vacillate between two! Brainstorm and make a quick list of your ideas. You should always spend a few minutes on planning if not you will tie yourself in Knots.

Paraphrase the topic and briefly give your opinion.

Toefl writing samples (immigration)
Immigration has had a significant impact on contemporary society. Every year, the number of people who decide to leave their home countries and migrate to another place increases. In this essay I will examine what I think are the reasons for and the consequences of this migration.
It would appear to me that, the main reason for immigration is driven by a strong desire for a better quality of life and a more certain and secure future. A lot of people from the so-called Third World move to developed countries in search of employment, and, better wages. The gulf between the standard of living between developed and under developed countries is massive and is increasing all the time. Moreover, living in a country with a strong economy guarantees that savings are safe and unlikely to be wiped out by hyperinflation. People leave the relatively instability of south and central america for the strong economies of the north.Thousand of people risk their lives on dangerous boat crossings in the mediterranean to avoid , famine and violence. The world is still plagued by wars and ethnic conflicts which cause an exodus of homeless endangered people from their home lands. Many people who migrate,do not have any illusions about their lives but they seek security and a safe future for their children.
Unfortunately immigration causes problems to the host nations, often people want the wealth of their adopted nations but they are not prepared to embrace the new culture and this causes clashes with the indigenous population.I am convinced that this kind of problem will heal with time and that wealthy nations will have to share or be swamped by their less fortunate neighbours.
Some of the immediate problems facing the immigrant are language barriers and lack of skills that are in demand. Countries have to run various refugee assistance programs to help these people, the indigenous population are often reluctant to accept these costs. It is often a pipe dream and the children often find it difficult to be accepted and adapt. The frequent manifestations and burning of cars in France is a contemporary example of this. Even, highly qualified specialists, don’t get work.
In conclusion, I think that most people who become immigrants do find a better quality of life but it is not guaranteed by any means. It is a big decision to uproot from your homeland without being sure of what the future holds. This however is an indication of the abject misery people suffer.
They often just have nothing to lose.
Things that might affect your mark:
Lack of Fluency: if your handwriting is illegible for the examiner and he/she can’t read it properly, you are likely to lose points.
Unoriginal answer: if you have learnt a topic by heart and simply wrote it by heart, you will probably get a low score for your essay. TOEFL examiner will assess you on original thoughts and opinions.
Restricted answer: if for example you only answer half of the question and don’t develop your opinion, you will be unlikely to get more than a band score 5 for the task.
