Lesson 33 – The job interview
Michael has been working diligently in his search for a job. He has sent his curriculum vitae to several companies and is eager to find an opening. However, there have not been any results and Michael is getting tired of searching for the perfect job.
Luckily, Michael has his first job interview for a position that he is very intrigued by and he recognises the importance of making a good first impression. Michael makes sure to arrive on time at the company’s headquarters where the interview will be held. The interviewer collects Michael from their lobby and proceeds with the interview in their office.
Interviewer: So, Michael, we have read your CV and it is very interesting. What made you apply for this particular position?
Michael: I feel that this job is ideal for me, as it requires a person who is very flexible and comfortable working with a team in a stressful environment. I believe I am a very dynamic person, and this job would be a great challenge for me.
Interviewer: Very well. Can you describe in further detail how these characteristics are visible in your personality. And what role do you naturally play in a team setting?
Michael: Hmm.. Well, I work very well under pressure and stress and I remain calm and optimistic under those circumstances. That is one of my strong points, actually. I naturally take on the role of a leader in a team as I like to organise people and delegate to make sure everyone is doing their best.
Interviewer: Okay, Michael. Could you tell me a few things about your background? Both your academic and personal background.
Michael: I have grown up in a very multicultural household. My father’s mother tongue is Portuguese and my mother’s native language is Swedish. But we have always lived in English-speaking countries so even though I am fluent in both Portuguese and Swedish, English is my language of choice. I have always attended international schools, which has given me the ability to relate to different cultures’ ways of thinking and being.
Interviewer: And what about your academic background? Could you elaborate?
Michael: Oh, yes, of course! I studied mechanical engineering at university and I have a master’s degree in it. I studied at the University of Warwick and thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
Interviewer: Thank you very much for your time, Michael! Somebody from the company will be in touch with you when we have made our decision. It was great meeting you!
Michael leaves the company’s lobby feeling optimistic and hopeful. He was polite and had an agreeable character during the interview and now he cannot wait to hear from the company.

The genitive is the label with which the way to indicate possession is known and to specify the owner as long as he is a person.
Possessor Object possessed
Therefore the structure would be the following:
Possessor, -‘s + Object possessed
It is important to emphasize that the object possessed loses the article. We would say Andy’s cat, but not Andy’s the cat * or The Andy’s cat *.

It’s Mr Smith‘s coat.
There are times when you can also use only the possessor with -‘s without the possessed object when it is understood.

ATTENTION. When the possessor is plural and the ending of that plural is -s the only thing we do is add an apostrophe at the end (-s’).
