Lesson 19 – The Barbecue

David: Are there any beers left?

Jeff: There are two beers left. We’ll have to buy some more.

David: There aren’t any burger buns left either. We should pick some more up.

Jeff: Ask the girls if they want anything else.

David: Karen… Polly. Jeff and I are going to the shops. There aren’t any burger buns left and we are running out of beer. Do you want anything?

(A moment’s pause…)

Polly: I think that we are okay. Oh no, There isn’t any tomato ketchup left. Could you pick some more up?

David: Tomato ketchup, okay! Is there any mayonnaise?

Polly: Yes, there is plenty of mayonnaise.

David: Okay.

Jeff: Is there going to be any chance we can make it to the baker’s before it closes?

David: Maybe. They do sell burger buns at the supermarket.

Jeff: I know but I prefer the ones from the baker’s.

David: Well we’d better leave now if we want to get there in time. In fact, thinking about it, there are two baker shops on the way.

Jeff: Great, I’m sure one of them will be open…

David: Chris’ Cobs Bakery is the best. Come on, let’s go!

GRAMMAR PRACTICE: THERE IS/ THERE ARE

 

 

We use there is and there are to express that something exists. There is is used when we talk about things in singular. There are is used when we talk about more than one thing.

 

Examples:

There is a ball.

There are 4 balls.

The singular form it can be contracted:

There is = There´s

 

Example:

There´s a ball.

Negative form

There is not = Singular
There are not = Plural

 

Examples:

There is not a ball in the box.

There are not 4 balls in the box.

There are contractions in both of them:

There isn´t = Singular
There aren´t = Plural

Examples:

There isn´t a ball in the box.

There aren´t 4 balls in the box.

Interrogative form

Is there? = Singular
Are there? = Plural

Examples:

Is there a ball in the box?

Are there 4 balls in the box?

The usual answer to these interrogative forms can be: Yes, there is/Yes, there are or No, there isn’t/No, there aren’t.

Examples:

Is there a bank here?

Yes, there is/No, there isn´t. 

Are there children in the park?

Yes, there are/No, there aren´t. 

Past Simple

There was = Singular

There were = Plural

Examples:

Yesterday there was a bus in the morning.

Yesterday there were two buses in the morning.

Presente Perfect

There has been = Singular
There have been = Plural

 

Examples:

There has been a demonstration.

There have been many demonstrations.

The Present Perfect form it can be contracted:

There´s been = Singular
There´ve been = Plural

 

Examples:

There´s been a demonstration.

There´ve been many demonstrations.

Future

There’s only one form to singular and plural when they refer to the future: There will be

 

Examples:

There will be a new worker soon.

There will be new workers soon.

In the same way, there is only one way for the future in negative: There won´t be

Examples:

There won´t be trains tomorrow.
