Our basic English course was inspired by the work of Ogden who chose a list of 850 core words which in theory were enough for a person to get by in everyday life, later Ogden revised this list to include a further 150 words that were relevant to the students activity thus establishing a basic 1000-word vocabulary for everyday work and life. We do not adhere strictly to the Ogden system because we think that developing the aural comprehension and the confidence in speaking far more important; however we have included Ogden’s word list in our course. We also cover the present simple and future tenses in order that the student may hold a coherent and flowing conversation all be it with a fairly restricted vocabulary.
